 What is Reiki ?
靈氣-霊気-レイキ-REIKI

Reiki is a Japanese term.
【
靈 】Rei means the energy of the heaven
【
氣 】Ki means the energy of the earth

The Japanese words
靈 氣 Reiki can be define as a miraculous/mysterious, ethereal, transcendental and sacred energy of the universe, which sustains all life. Reiki is the name, used by Usui Sensei, for energy of the universe.

The word
靈 氣 Reiki is a common noun in the Japanese language. This cosmic energy is called with a variety of names - "Chi" in China, "Ki" in Japan, "Prana in India, "Mana" in Hawaii etc.

Overview
Reiki Ryoho is a healing practice that originated in Japan. Reiki Ryoho practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above the person receiving treatment, with the goal of facilitating the person's own healing response. In the United States, Reiki is part of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).
Reiki Ryoho s generally practiced as a form of self-care. Reiki can be received from someone else and may be offered in a variety of health care settings, including medical offices, hospitals, hospices and clinics. It can be practiced on its own or along with other CAM therapies or conventional medical treatments.
Research on Reiki Ryoho has generally focused on symptom management or well-being.

Use in the United States
According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which included a comprehensive survey of CAM use by Americans, more than 1.2 million adults—0.5 percent of the U.S. general adult population—
had used an energy healing therapy, such as Reiki, in the previous year. The survey also found that approximately 161,000 children had used an energy healing therapy in the previous years.

Side- effects and Risks
*  Reiki appears to be generally safe, and no serious side effects have been reported.

The Status of Reiki Research

There has been limited clinical research (studies in people) on Reiki. Available research has examined the use of Reiki for conditions such as fibromyalgia, pain, cancer, and depression, and for overall well-being. Although some small studies suggest that Reiki may help with symptoms related to these conditions, others have not found any clinical benefits. There is a lack of high-quality research to definitively evaluate Reiki’s effectiveness for any therapeutic purpose.

Training, Licensing, Certification
*No licensing, professional  standards or professional regulations exists for the practice of Reiki. There are many different forms of Reiki and there are no specific background or credentials are needed to receive training. Reiki practitioners' training and expertise vary. Increasingly, many people who seek training are licensed health care professionals.

If You Are Thinking About Using Reiki
* Do not use Reiki as a replacement for proven conventional care or postpone seeing a health care provider about a medical problem.
* Be aware that Reiki has not been thoroughly studied scientifically.
* Tell all your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use to ensure coordinated and safe care

USUI Mikao Sensei(1865-1926)

Picture
USUI Mikao Sensei is the Founder of Usui Reiki Ryoho. Sensei commonly known by the name "Mikao" with an extra name "Gyohan" is from Taniai-mura (village), Yamaga-gun (country), Gifu-ken (perfecture). Sensei was born on August 15, 1865. His father's name was Taneuji, and was commonly called Uzaemon. His mother was from Kawai family.

It was in Kurama-yama, after 21 days of a severe discipline without eating, that he attained enlightenment and obtained Reiki Ryoho. Then, he tried it on himself and experimented on his family members. Sensei thought that it would be far better to offer it widely to the general public and share its benefits than just to improve the well being of his own family members.

In April 11, 1922, he settled in Harajuku, Aoyama, Tokyo and set up the Gakkai to teach Reiki Ryoho and give treatments. In September, 1923, there was a great earthquake. Sensei, feeling pity for them, went out every morning to go around the town, and he cured and saved an innumerable number of people.

Due to his respected and far reaching reputation, many people from local districts wished to invite him. Sensei, accepting the invitations, went to Kure, and then to Hiroshima and Saga, and reached Fukuyama. Unexpectedly, he became ill and passed away there. It was March 9 of the 15th year of Taisho (A.D. 1926), aged 62.
